A smart reseller tries to remove uncertainty before spending money. The point isn't to predict a perfect sale price; it's to build a decision you can explain to yourself even if the item doesn't sell as hoped.
Estimate after packaging, not before
Measure the packed length, width, height and weight. Carriers may price shipments using dimensional weight, which can make a light but bulky vintage item surprisingly expensive.
Protect fragile mechanisms
Remove loose accessories when appropriate, cushion moving parts and keep pressure away from knobs, glass or delicate arms. Follow carrier and manufacturer packing guidance for sensitive equipment.
Account for all packing materials
A sturdy box, dense foam, tape and void fill can cost real money. Record those expenses as part of your margin calculation, even when you already have supplies on hand.
Decide who pays what
Buyer-paid shipping appears in your revenue but may also increase marketplace fee bases. Your actual shipping and insurance bill must be entered separately to avoid double counting.
Local pickup can change the decision
For very large fragile items, the right answer may be local collection rather than long-distance shipping. Compare the likely local sale price and time-to-sell before choosing.
